House Speaker, Nabih Berri, on Thursday expressed hope in a press conference that blocks 8 and 9 could be a way for Lebanon to pay its debts “if maritime border demarcation with Israel proves to be a success.”

Discussing the framework that has been agreed upon for negotiating border demarcation, Berri said that US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s visit to Lebanon had revived the border demarcation file.  

“The US is aware that the governments of Lebanon and Israel are ready to demarcate their maritime borders based on the tripartite agreements of April 1996 and currently under Resolution 1701,” Berri explained. 

He also said that the US had been asked to play the role of a “mediator” in the maritime demarcation process and was ready to do so.

“When demarcation is finally agreed upon, the maritime border agreement will be deposited with the UN, in accordance with the international law and relevant treaties,” Berri added. Read more
