June 19, 2018 Lebanon is moving toward using green diesel as opposed to red diesel, the caretaker energy minister announced Tuesday. “We are announcing today a big environmental step towards eliminating polluted diesel from the Lebanese market,” caretaker Energy Minister Cesar Abi Khalil said in a televised news conference. The minister said the standard wasn’t adopted earlier in the year because during winter, many Lebanese residents use diesel in household radiator heaters. “The price for green diesel was more expensive than red diesel in the winter and this would have had a drastic economic impact,” Abi Khalil said. He said that the two types of diesel are now around the same price, noting that the pollution levels are much higher in red diesel. Abi Khalil stated there was also a demand to move from gasoline to “Euro 6,” a European emission standard to reduce toxic exhaust emissions from gas and diesel cars. He said that this will be studied with regard to vehicle importers. Read more
